Good Book by Jose Saramago

Last week I picked up a book that a friend of mine recommended. The book was by a Portuguese writer, Jose Saramago. The book was titled “Blindness.”

Saramago is quite a literary giant in his own right and has written many books that have earned him international praise and even a Nobel Prize in literature. It was with a lot of interest that I started reading and it has not disappointed me.

The book is about how a mystery illness quickly infects mankind and spreads all over the globe. This isn’t just a normal “plague”: the result is total blindness. It is contagious and one by one, the entire world goes blind, except for one woman, who for some unknown reason is the only one able to witness the carnage around her.

It’s such an interesting concept to tackle. The chaos, the suffering and the conflict that this situation creates are captured brilliantly by the writer.

I am in the middle of the book right now and I am in no hurry to get to the end!
