As the new year’s coming up, I resolved to start a new hobby. I’ve decided that I would start building a movie collection.

Thanks to DVDs, it’s not hard to amass a large and diverse collection of good quality movies. However, I think the challenge would be to collect the classics, inclusive of those rare movies that not many people know much about. I think every movie buff probably has their copy of “Casablanca” or “Reservoir Dogs,” but would they have Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon” or Federico Fellini’s “8 _” ? This is the challenge; to balance the contemporary classics with more underground hits that made an impact for their artistic contribution to film history.

I have set about building the foundations for my efforts by making a list. I started off with the well known classics. Movies like “Citizen Kane,” “Coolhand Luke” and “Deerhunter.” I would also mix in those movies that most modern experts would consider as landmark films of an entirely new generation. Films like “Trainspotting,” “Bottle Rocket” and “Seven.” My list is still growing. The more I speak to friends and talk movies, there’s more and more additions.

I think I’m going to enjoy my new hobby. Not only will it be a topic for conversation when people see my collection, it will also give me hours and hours of personal pleasure.
